You’ve got a crack in your windshield and you’re weighing your options: repair or replace? It’s tempting to go with the cheaper fix, but a repair won’t always hold, and in some situations it’s not even a safe choice. Here are five signs that your windshield needs to be replaced, not patched.
Chip repairs are designed for small damage, typically a chip no larger than a quarter or a crack shorter than about three inches. Once damage grows beyond that, resin can’t fill the crack evenly enough to restore structural strength. A crack six inches or longer means you need a new windshield. Trying to repair it anyway is a waste of money and time, and it won’t pass most inspection requirements either.
If you’re unsure how long your crack is, bring your vehicle in for a free assessment at Texan Glass in The Woodlands or any of our Houston-area locations. We can tell you in a few minutes what you’re working with.
Even a small crack can be a problem if it’s positioned directly in the driver’s line of vision. Repair resin, while effective at stopping crack spread, leaves a slight distortion that can impair visibility, especially at night or in direct sunlight. Texas law and most inspection standards prohibit visible damage in the swept area of the windshield for exactly this reason.
If the damage is in that critical zone, replacement is the only safe option. Don’t risk a failed inspection or, more importantly, reduced visibility in a moment when you need to see clearly.
One chip is manageable. Three chips and a crack spreading from the edge? That’s a different situation. Multiple points of damage compromise the integrity of the glass as a whole. Windshields are designed as a single bonded safety system, and when multiple areas are compromised, the glass can’t distribute impact force properly in a collision or rollover.
Multiple damage sites also typically mean the glass has been weakened enough that a repair won’t hold long-term. You’ll end up paying for both a temporary repair and then a replacement anyway. Better to replace it once and be done.
Edge cracks are particularly stubborn. When a crack originates within two inches of the windshield’s perimeter, it’s already in a zone where the glass experiences the most stress from vehicle flex, temperature changes, and road vibration. These cracks spread quickly and are almost impossible to stabilize with a repair.
Corner damage is even more likely to compromise the seal between the glass and the frame, which can lead to leaks, whistling, and eventually delamination. If you’re dealing with edge or corner damage, replacement is the standard recommendation from most glass professionals.
Windshields are made of laminated safety glass, two layers of glass with a polyvinyl butyral (PVB) interlayer bonded between them. Over time, or after certain types of impacts, that interlayer can begin to separate. You’ll notice it as a white, cloudy, or hazy appearance in the glass, often spreading from a damaged area or the edges.
Delamination can’t be repaired. The structural integrity is gone, and the visual obstruction it creates can be significant. If your windshield looks foggy, cloudy from the inside, or has spots that can’t be cleaned away, it’s time for a replacement.
If your vehicle is equipped with advanced safety features such as lane departure warning, automatic emergency braking, or adaptive cruise control, those systems use cameras or sensors positioned near the windshield. After a replacement, those cameras have to be recalibrated to your specific vehicle’s specifications.
At Texan Glass, ADAS calibration is part of our replacement process. We don’t skip this step, because your safety systems are only as good as the calibration behind them. Not every shop offers this, so make sure to ask before you book.
We make the process straightforward. Call us, tell us your vehicle information and the damage you’re dealing with, and we’ll give you an honest answer about whether a repair or replacement makes sense. We work with all major insurance companies and handle the claims process for you. Most replacements are completed the same day, and we’ll walk you through ADAS calibration needs before we begin.
