ADAS Camera Calibration After Glass Work: Texas FAQ

If you’ve recently had your windshield replaced in Texas, you may have heard your technician mention ADAS recalibration. For many drivers, that term raises more questions than answers. What is it? Do you actually need it? How much does it cost? How long does it take? And what happens to your vehicle’s safety systems if you skip it?

These are the right questions to ask, and the answers matter. Texas roads see everything from highway construction debris to sudden Gulf Coast hailstorms, and the safety technology built into modern vehicles is designed to help you handle those conditions. When that technology is not calibrated correctly after glass work, it cannot do its job. Understanding what calibration involves helps you make informed decisions at the auto glass shop.

At Texan Glass, we perform ADAS camera calibration after windshield replacement at all of our Texas locations, including The Woodlands, Houston South, Grand Prairie, Corpus Christi, Beaumont, and Victoria. This FAQ covers everything Texas drivers need to know about calibration after auto glass work.

What Triggers ADAS Recalibration?

ADAS stands for Advanced Driver Assistance Systems. These systems include lane departure warning, forward collision alert, automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, and blind-spot monitoring. Most of these features rely on one or more cameras mounted near or behind the windshield.

When the windshield is removed and replaced, the camera’s physical position shifts, even slightly. A shift of just a few millimeters can throw the system off enough to cause missed alerts, false warnings, or complete system failure. That is why windshield replacement is one of the most common triggers for ADAS recalibration.

Other events that may require recalibration include:

  • Any collision that affects the windshield or front of the vehicle
  • Suspension repairs that alter ride height
  • Wheel alignment adjustments
  • Removal of the rearview mirror bracket
  • Software updates to the vehicle’s safety system

If your ADAS warning light turns on after a windshield replacement, that is a clear sign your system needs recalibration. In some vehicles, the system will disable certain safety features automatically until calibration is completed.

Static vs. Dynamic Calibration: What is the Difference?

There are two main types of ADAS calibration: static and dynamic. The type your vehicle requires depends entirely on the make, model, and model year. Some vehicles require both.

Static calibration is performed in a controlled indoor environment. The technician positions a target board or pattern at a precise distance and height in front of the vehicle. The camera system uses this reference point to re-establish its baseline orientation. The vehicle must be parked on a level surface, and the calibration equipment must be positioned exactly according to manufacturer specifications. This process typically takes 30 to 90 minutes depending on the vehicle.

Dynamic calibration requires the vehicle to be driven at a specific speed, typically above 15 to 25 miles per hour, on a road with clear lane markings. The system recalibrates itself using live input from the camera as the vehicle moves. A technician must accompany the driver during this process to monitor the system and confirm calibration is complete. Dynamic calibration typically takes 15 to 30 minutes of driving time.

Some vehicles, such as certain Honda, Subaru, and Toyota models, require both a static and dynamic phase. Your Texan Glass technician will know exactly what your vehicle requires before any glass work begins.

How Long Does ADAS Calibration Take in Texas?

For most drivers in Texas, the total time from windshield drop-off to picking up your fully calibrated vehicle runs between 90 minutes and three hours. Here is a general breakdown:

  • Windshield replacement: 60 to 90 minutes for most vehicles
  • Adhesive cure time: At least 30 to 60 minutes before calibration begins
  • Static calibration: 30 to 90 minutes
  • Dynamic calibration drive: 15 to 30 minutes, if required

Luxury vehicles and trucks with multiple camera systems may take longer. Vehicles that require both static and dynamic calibration will also need more time. When you schedule with Texan Glass, let us know your make and model so we can give you an accurate time estimate.

Same-day calibration is available at most of our Texas locations. If you need your vehicle back quickly, call ahead so we can plan accordingly.

What Does ADAS Calibration Cost in Texas?

The cost of ADAS calibration in Texas varies based on the type of calibration required and your vehicle. General price ranges you can expect:

  • Static calibration only: $150 to $350
  • Dynamic calibration only: $100 to $200
  • Both static and dynamic: $250 to $500

One important note for Texas drivers: most comprehensive auto insurance policies cover ADAS calibration as part of a windshield replacement claim. Texas law does not require insurers to waive the deductible for glass claims, but many insurers do offer a glass-only deductible waiver or zero-deductible glass endorsement. If your policy includes this, your calibration may be covered at no out-of-pocket cost.

Texan Glass works directly with all major insurance carriers. We handle the claim on your behalf and will let you know upfront whether your policy covers calibration. There are no surprises on your final bill.

Is ADAS Calibration Required by Law in Texas?

Texas does not have a specific law mandating ADAS recalibration after windshield replacement. However, vehicle manufacturers require it. When you drive a vehicle with an uncalibrated ADAS system, you are operating safety equipment in a degraded or non-functional state.

If your vehicle was involved in an accident and it is found that your ADAS system was not properly calibrated after a prior windshield replacement, that fact could affect an insurance claim or liability determination. More importantly, a lane departure warning that fails to alert you at the right moment, or an automatic braking system that does not respond correctly, puts you and everyone around you at risk.

Texas state vehicle inspections do not currently check ADAS calibration status, so there is no inspection failure risk. But from a safety standpoint, skipping calibration is not something we recommend. The systems are designed to work together, and a windshield that goes in without recalibration can leave your safety technology operating on incorrect assumptions about what is in front of your vehicle.

Our position at Texan Glass is simple: if your vehicle has ADAS and we are replacing your windshield, we recommend calibration. Period. We will tell you upfront if your specific vehicle requires it and walk you through the process so you leave with everything working as designed.
