Texas summers are no joke. From The Woodlands to Houston South, temperatures routinely push past 100 degrees Fahrenheit, and your vehicle sits baking in that heat for hours at a time. If you need a windshield replacement during summer, there are a few things you should know before scheduling your appointment. The heat affects the installation process in real ways, and understanding what to expect helps you get the best result from your service.
Modern windshields are bonded to the vehicle frame using a polyurethane adhesive, often called urethane. This adhesive creates a structural bond that holds the windshield in place and contributes to the overall rigidity of your vehicle. During a rollover accident, a properly bonded windshield can account for up to 30 percent of your vehicle’s roof strength. Getting that bond right is not optional.
Here is where Texas summers come in. Urethane adhesive is temperature-sensitive. It cures through a chemical reaction that is affected by both heat and humidity. In moderate climates, the adhesive cures at a predictable rate. In Texas during July or August, the substrate temperature of your vehicle frame and glass can be well above ambient air temperature when your car has been sitting in direct sun. That elevated surface temperature can affect how the adhesive flows and sets during installation.

Your technician will tell you the minimum wait time based on the specific adhesive used, your vehicle’s requirements, and the conditions at the time of installation. Take that guidance seriously.
What you should not do is assume faster is always better. High heat can cause accelerated surface skinning on the adhesive before the deeper layers have cured. A properly trained technician uses the right product for the conditions and gives you accurate SDAT guidance. Always follow the technician’s instructions, not a generic internet estimate.
For vehicles equipped with ADAS systems, including lane departure warnings, forward collision alerts, or rain-sensing wipers, the recalibration process follows windshield replacement. ADAS cameras are mounted to or near the windshield, and proper recalibration ensures those systems work correctly after the new glass is installed. One of the most practical things you can do to support a quality summer installation is reduce the heat load on your vehicle before service begins. A car that has been sitting in direct Texas sun for two or three hours has interior and surface temperatures far higher than the outside air temperature. The dashboard can reach 160 degrees or more. The vehicle frame and pinch weld where the urethane is applied will also be extremely hot.

Once your windshield replacement is complete, there are several steps you should follow to protect the bond during the cure period. These matter even more in summer heat.
Follow the Safe Drive Away Time exactly. Your technician will give you a minimum wait period. Do not shorten it. If you need to leave sooner, talk to the technician before the installation begins so they can factor that into product selection.
Do not run the car through an automatic car wash for at least 24 to 48 hours. High-pressure water can stress an uncured bond. Hand washing with low pressure is fine after the SDAT has passed, but give the adhesive a full day before any automated wash.
Leave the retention tape in place if your technician applied it. Some installations use tape strips along the glass edge to hold position during cure. Leave these in place until your technician advises removal, typically after 24 to 48 hours.
Avoid slamming car doors aggressively. This creates pressure waves inside the cabin that can stress a new adhesive bond before it reaches full cure strength. Close doors firmly but without force for the first day.
Do not pressure wash the windshield perimeter. The area around the urethane seal is particularly sensitive during cure. Avoid directing high-pressure water at the edges of the new glass for at least 48 hours.
