Will an auto glass replacement affect my insurance rates?

So you’ve managed to get a crack or chip in your windshield, and you’re not sure whether or not you should go through your insurance. Whether a repair or replacement is necessary, there can sometimes be benefits to going through your insurance, but sometimes there’s no reason to.

The first thing you should do is check to see what your deductible is. This is the amount that you are required to pay out of pocket before insurance benefits kick in. Many plans have deductibles of $500, but ones with lower monthly payments may have higher ones like $1000.

Once you know your deductible, the next step is to give us a call. When you call Texan Glass & Solar Control, come prepared with the year, make, and model of your vehicle as well as whether or not it has special features like rain or condensation sensors. One of our auto glass specialists will give you an instant quote over the phone.

Here’s where knowledge of your deductible comes in! Most vehicles we quote are within the $200-$300 range. If your deductible is $500, there is no reason to go through your insurance because you would be paying completely out of pocket. However, newer vehicles, vehicles with safety sensors, and even older vehicles may be more expensive. Your vehicle may even require an ADAS calibration. If this is the case, it is possible your auto glass service could total over $500. In that case, it would be worth it to go through insurance.

However, even if your quote is below your deductible some insurance policies have special addendums for windshield and auto glass protections. Typically found in full coverage plans, these policies will waive the deductible and cover your repair or replacement in full. Call your insurance agent to verify whether or not you have this type of coverage, because it’s a great benefit and can save you a couple hundred dollars out of pocket.

Now the golden question- if you go through your insurance, will your provider raise your rates? In the case of auto glass, all evidence leads to no. No, your insurance provider will not increase your rates if you use them for auto glass. This is because auto glass breakage typically isn’t due to driver negligence. More than often, a vehicle in front of you kicks up a rock that cracks your windshield, and no amount of smart driving could have prevented this from happening.

That being said, if you’re filing auto glass claims multiple times per year, it can be assumed that the insurance company would indeed adjust your rates based on your history. However, in most cases if you decide to go through insurance, a claim will not raise your rate.

So what are the next steps? If you’d like to go through insurance, call your insurance agent and let them know you want to use Texan Glass & Solar Control. They will handle the claim with us, then you may call us to schedule an appointment. If you’re paying out of pocket, just give us a call and we can schedule you in as early as same-day depending on if your glass is in stock.

Glass is glass, and when it ends up breaking you will be taken care of by us here at Texan Glass & Solar Control, and maybe your insurance company will be able to help out too!
