Most Texas drivers think of windshield replacement when they think of auto glass, but side window damage is just as common and can happen fast. A smash-and-grab, a collision, a power window failure, or a stray rock on the highway can leave you with a missing or shattered door glass overnight. Here is what you need to know about side window replacement in Texas and what to expect when you call Texan Glass.
Door glass is the primary side window in a vehicle, the one that rolls up and down. This is the most commonly replaced side window. Door glass on most modern vehicles is tempered glass, which shatters into small, relatively safe pieces rather than large shards. It does not have a laminate layer like windshields, so it cannot be repaired once cracked or broken.
Quarter glass is the smaller fixed or sometimes movable window behind the rear door or at the rear of the vehicle. Fixed quarter glass is bonded in place with urethane adhesive, similar to windshield installation. This replacement is more involved than door glass because the glass must be cut out and a new piece bonded in with proper cure time before driving.
Vent glass is the small triangular window at the front corner of the front doors on many vehicle models. It is typically fixed and bonded like quarter glass. Breakage is common from theft attempts and vandalism.
Rear door glass operates like front door glass and uses the same tempered construction. Replacement process is similar but rear channels and regulators vary by vehicle.
Break-ins and theft. Texas cities see significant vehicle break-in rates. Thieves target visible items left in vehicles, and door glass is fast to break. If your vehicle was broken into, the police report number is useful when filing an insurance claim.
Accidents and collisions. Side impacts, door jams, and rollovers can shatter door glass. Insurance coverage for collision damage is separate from comprehensive glass coverage, and your deductible may be higher.
Power window regulator failure. When a window regulator fails, the glass can drop inside the door. In some cases the glass breaks during the drop. In others, the glass is intact but stuck inside the door and cannot be raised. Both scenarios require removing the door panel and regulator to extract or reinstall the glass.
Weather events. Hail can shatter side windows and quarter glass on exposed vehicles. Texas hail seasons are severe, and comprehensive coverage typically covers hail damage.
Side window replacement costs vary by vehicle make, model, and glass type:
Unlike windshields, side windows on most standard vehicles do not require ADAS recalibration, which keeps costs lower. The exception is vehicles with cameras or sensors mounted at the side windows, which are increasingly common on newer model years.
Side window damage from break-ins, vandalism, hail, and weather events falls under comprehensive coverage. If you have comprehensive coverage with a deductible at or below the replacement cost, your insurance covers it minus your deductible.

Similar to windshield replacement, the vehicle should not be driven immediately after installation.
