Rock Chip Repair vs Full Windshield Replacement: How Texas Drivers Should Decide

The most common question Texas drivers ask after noticing windshield damage is whether it needs a full replacement or whether the damage can be repaired. The answer depends on specific characteristics of the damage — size, location, and type. Here is how to evaluate the decision.

When Chip Repair Is the Right Choice

A chip or bullseye crack can be repaired — rather than replaced — when it meets all of the following criteria: it is smaller than a quarter in diameter, it is not in the driver’s primary line of sight (directly in front of the steering wheel), it has not spread into a crack longer than six inches, and it does not extend to the edge of the glass.

Chip repair takes about 30 minutes. The technician injects a clear resin into the damaged area under vacuum, which fills the void and bonds to the surrounding glass. When complete, the damage is significantly less visible and — more importantly — the structural integrity of the glass is restored. A properly repaired chip will not spread further.

Chip repair costs $50 to $150, and in many cases your insurance covers it with no deductible under your comprehensive coverage.

When Full Replacement Is Necessary

Full replacement is required when the damage is too large or complex to repair reliably. Specifically, replacement is the right call when a crack is longer than six inches, when a chip is larger than a quarter, when the damage is directly in the driver’s line of sight, or when the damage has reached the edge of the glass.

Edge cracks are particularly urgent. A crack that reaches the frame has compromised the seal between the glass and the vehicle, which allows water infiltration and weakens the structural support the windshield provides to the roof and airbag system. Edge damage requires replacement, not repair.

Texas Heat and Crack Spread

In Texas, heat accelerates crack spread significantly. A small chip that might stay stable for weeks in a cooler climate can spread to a crack requiring full replacement within days in summer heat. If you notice a chip, getting it evaluated quickly is worthwhile — a $100 repair can prevent a $400 replacement.

Cost Comparison

Chip repair: $50 to $150. Often covered by insurance with no deductible.

Full replacement: $200 to $600 depending on vehicle and glass type. Covered by comprehensive insurance minus your deductible.
