If you’ve just cracked your windshield and your first thought is how long is this going to take?, you’re not alone. Most Texas drivers want to know what to expect before they book an appointment. The short answer: a standard windshield replacement takes about 60 to 90 minutes in the shop. But there’s more to the picture than that one number, especially if your vehicle has advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) or you’re relying on mobile service.
At Texan Glass, we complete windshield replacements daily at our locations across The Woodlands, Houston, Grand Prairie, Corpus Christi, Beaumont, and Victoria. Here’s exactly what to expect from start to finish.
For most vehicles, the replacement process breaks down into three phases:
1. Removal (15 to 20 minutes)
A technician carefully removes all trim and molding around your existing windshield. The damaged glass is then cut free using a cold knife or wire cut-out tool. This step requires precision, especially on newer vehicles with tight tolerances and integrated sensors.
2. Preparation and adhesive application (10 to 15 minutes)
The frame is cleaned and prepped. A new urethane adhesive is applied around the pinch weld, and the fresh glass is set into place. This is where accuracy matters most. An improperly seated windshield can whistle at highway speeds, leak in rain, or fail safety inspection.
3. Cure time (30 to 60 minutes minimum in shop, up to 1 hour drive-away safe)
Urethane adhesive needs time to cure before the vehicle is safe to drive. Industry standard safe drive-away time (SDAT) is typically one hour at room temperature, though some high-humidity Texas days or specific adhesive formulas may require slightly longer. We’ll tell you exactly when your vehicle is ready.
Total in-shop time: 60 to 90 minutes for most standard sedans, trucks, and SUVs.
Not every job moves at the same pace. Several factors can add time to your appointment.
Vehicle make and model
Older vehicles with simple glass and minimal trim are faster. Late-model trucks and luxury SUVs often have more components to remove, more sensors to protect, and tighter molding tolerances. Some European imports and newer American trucks can add 20 to 30 minutes to the process.
Rain sensor or camera integration
If your windshield has a built-in rain sensor, heads-up display (HUD) coating, or a forward-facing camera bracket attached to the glass, those components need to be carefully transferred to the new windshield. Skipping or rushing this step can damage sensors worth hundreds of dollars to replace.
Damage to the frame or seal
If the pinch weld or molding was damaged by the previous glass, corroded over time, or had old sealant buildup, the tech will need to clean and prep more carefully before setting the new glass. This adds time but is not optional. Cutting corners here leads to leaks and structural problems.
Mobile vs. in-shop service
Mobile windshield replacement adds travel time, but the actual replacement process is the same. One thing to keep in mind: mobile service requires a flat, stable surface, shade when possible, and moderate temperatures. In the Texas summer heat, we may need to work in early morning hours for optimal adhesive performance.
Glass availability
If your vehicle requires a specialty windshield, like a heated glass option, specific tint level, or dealer-only glass for a newer model year, we may need to source it before the appointment. Most common vehicles have same-day glass availability through our Texas distribution network.
This is where a lot of Texas drivers get surprised. If your vehicle has a forward-facing camera mounted to or near the windshield, replacing the glass is only the first step. The camera needs to be recalibrated to factory specs before your safety systems work correctly.
ADAS systems that depend on the windshield camera include:
When the windshield is replaced, the camera’s angle relative to the road changes by fractions of a millimeter. That’s enough to throw off detection accuracy. Driving with an uncalibrated camera means those systems may fail to alert or react in time during an emergency.
Texan Glass performs both static and dynamic ADAS recalibration at our shop locations. Static calibration uses a target board in the shop and typically takes 30 to 60 additional minutes after the glass is installed. Dynamic calibration requires driving the vehicle on a flat road for a set distance, which adds another 20 to 40 minutes.
Not every vehicle requires recalibration after a windshield swap, but if yours does and you skip it, you’re driving with compromised safety systems. Our technicians will tell you upfront whether your vehicle needs it. For a full breakdown of the recalibration process, see our ADAS recalibration guide for Texas drivers.
Total appointment with ADAS recalibration: 2 to 3 hours depending on your vehicle and calibration type required.

For same-day mobile service, availability depends on your zip code and current schedule. Call your nearest location early in the morning for the best chance at a same-day mobile slot.
A little preparation goes a long way toward keeping your appointment on schedule.
Clear out your car
The technician needs access to the interior around the windshield, especially the dashboard. If you have a dashcam, GPS mount, or rearview mirror with a camera, let us know when you book. We’ll remove and reinstall those components carefully.
Plan your day around cure time
After your replacement, plan to leave the vehicle parked for at least an hour. Do not slam doors, run the car through a car wash, or drive at highway speeds for at least 24 hours. The adhesive needs time to reach full strength.
Know your VIN
When you call to book, have your vehicle identification number (VIN) handy. We use it to pull the exact glass specifications for your vehicle and confirm availability before your appointment.
Have your insurance card ready
If you’re going through insurance, bring your card and policy number. We’ll coordinate with your carrier directly, but having the info on hand speeds up the process. Wondering what your deductible looks like? Check out our post on auto glass repair in The Woodlands for what to expect.
Ask about ADAS before you arrive
If your vehicle was made after 2015, there’s a good chance it has a windshield-mounted camera. When you call, mention your year, make, and model. We’ll let you know if recalibration is on the table so you can block out the right amount of time.
Whether you’re in The Woodlands, Houston, Grand Prairie, Corpus Christi, Beaumont, or Victoria, Texan Glass has a location near you with experienced technicians and same-day glass availability for most vehicles. Most standard jobs are completed in under 90 minutes. We handle the insurance. We handle the ADAS recalibration. You just show up.
